200 students, 10 companies, one day… Design Day. The aim of Design Day is to give students a sense of what real life designing is all about and potential careers that are involved within the industry. The diverse range of companies allows students to undertake a brief that will really test the skills and abilities that they have built on since the start of KS3. ‘Design Day’ inspires creativity, teamwork, problem solving, project management and analytical thinking. The day is fun, encouraging, inventive, and innovative and gives the students an invaluable insight into a working real life industry, giving them food for thought during their options week.
Ex-Fernwood Student Daniel Deadman-Corsie from Rolls Royce’s Thermochromics Paints Department, kindly joined us at design day. He introduced the students to some new tools on SolidWorks, before allowing the students time to create their very own aeroplane. The outcomes were extremely well constructed and received high praise from Daniel, who has recently worked on the Trent 1000 aeroplane engine. The students left feeling inspired, with some deciding on a future career with Rolls Royce.
Students and staff spent a wonderful day with two top designers from Pelham Architects. The day was focused around one main activity related to graphics and engineering. whilst looking at the different styles and bridge types. After a morning of theory work, sketched concepts were produced alongside the architects. In the afternoon students were given an opportunity to apply their new found knowledge as well as their maths and science skills to model a bridge with a given span and that would hold a specific load of concrete. The sheer amount of creativity and designs was a joy to see with most groups meeting the criteria specified, impressing our guests. A brilliant brief and a great day had by all!
