Fernwood Girls’ Chess Team Success

Published on 30th April 2018

I am proud inform you that the Fernwood Girls’ Chess Team recently won the prestigious title of the best u19 Girls’ School at Chess in the country. These are the details of the tournament that we played on the 7th and 8th of April in Guildford at St.Catherine’s school. There were 7 rounds: 3 on Saturday and 4 on Sunday. Some of the best schools across England and Wales participated. This was a team tournament so there were teams of 3 girls from each schools. This is our board order:

Team Captain and Board 1: Ritika Maladkar

Board 2: Lavanya Maladkar

Board 3: Alana Leung

We received a glass trophy, medals and a massive, heavy wooden chess set which is going to have ‘Fernwood’ engraved on it. In this tournament I actually managed to beat a woman chess master who has represented England in many international tournaments. This was definitely a team effort where everyone gave their level best. It was indeed an exciting moment for all of us!

This was a quote by the presenter about us

‘The girls were all excellent ambassadors for their schools and  demonstrated the high standard of girls’ chess in schools in the UK.’
