Dear Parents and Carers
It has been another busy term with many trips, sporting events and clubs continuing to take place. There were also successful trips to China and France. I am very pleased with the overwhelming majority of students, both in terms of their attitude and commitment to their learning. Students and staff have adapted well to the new timetable and governors have recently met with key middle leaders in order to continue to support the school and its ongoing development.
The building work is scheduled to finish at some point in February 2020 (weather dependent) and if all runs to schedule the glass window installation should be finalised this week. An impression of the new building elevations can be seen below. I am sure you would agree it looks impressive.
Please note that the school catchment WILL NOT be changing. The additional places will mean that children in catchment are more likely to be offered a place. Regrettably there are many, many examples recently of children in the catchment not being offered a place as the number of children in the community has increased.
I am concerned with how some students are cycling to school and not wearing helmets. I will write to those parents in the new year. If you are buying Christmas presents this year you may wish to consider cycling helmets.
The PE Department can make good use of any sporting footwear or clothing that your son or daughter may have grown out of. Any donations would be most welcome.
Year 11 will receive their Mock Exam results in January. It is important that Year 11 use the holiday to rest but also ensure that they are up to date with all their subjects. Year 11 parents’ evening is on Thursday 30thJanuary 2020.
Year 10 Science Mocks are scheduled to commence the week beginning 20th January 2020. Year 10 have settled in well to their KS4 courses. I would encourage them to make sure they are organised in all subjects and are prepared for their science mocks.
Year 9 Parents Evening is on Thursday 9th January. Year 9 Design Day takes place on Friday 24th January. A large number of technical companies support the school and our students in making them aware of their future career opportunities. Year 9 Options Evening is on February 12th 2020.
Year 7 Hagg Farm will take place over two weeks Jan 13th- 24th 2020 and individuals are aware of the dates they are due to attend. I am absolutely delighted that the overwhelming majority of students will be taking part. It really helps our young people settle into the ‘Fernwood Family’.
As part of our Christmas celebrations, we will be celebrating Christmas jumper day on Friday 13th December. Students may opt to wear a Christmas jumper in place of their blazer. If they choose not to, full uniform is expected. These arrangements will also apply for our final day of the term.
School will finish at 1:30pm on December 20th. I would like to wish you all a joyful and restful Christmas and we look forward to seeing all our young people, smartly dressed and ready to start lessons at 8:30am on Monday January 6th 2020.
