Dear Parents / Carers
Can I thank you on behalf of all the staff for your kind messages and feedback with regards to this extensive period of home learning. It has not been possible to respond to all emails on an individual basis but I will try to cover the majority of them within this letter.
Health and Safety
For the last 3 weeks, my professional association have been asking some pretty basic questions of government surrounding the Health and Safety of students and staff should schools reopen. Answers have not been forthcoming. It is of course an unprecedented time and my association and all who work in school will continue to seek solutions to the challenges ahead.
Fernwood Secondary School will only reopen when it is safe to do so following a full risk assessment. I cannot foresee a situation where the school returns to normal before September. However, if it is safe to do so, I would like all year groups and Year 6 to have some experience of school before we close for the summer. I am acutely aware that because of health vulnerabilities of some families that this would not be possible for all children. I will of course write to you in more detail if and when appropriate.
Many layers of Senior Leadership and Middle management have been involved in meetings this week to explore how technology can be exploited to provide greater ‘face to face’ communication with staff. This remains a point of discussion and I know that different colleagues are exploring different opportunities within departments and faculties. Face to face contact, even over the internet can enhance student well-being. I want to be clear that this will not be achievable for all staff and to demand such would be unreasonable.
I appreciate that this is not relevant to all but ‘Springboard’ work is now live on Bilborough College’s website for Year 11 students. Knowing how great a jump KS4 to KS5 can be I would encourage all students to engage with the facility.
Due to Covid all work on the building stopped 7 weeks ago. Within the last 3 weeks every building trade has been operational. It is now nearly complete and I am optimistic that we will take possession in June!
The PTA held a ‘zoom’ meeting and have provided further funding of laptops and micro bit technology which will support coding for Mrs Dakers and the Computer Science Department. It is much appreciated.
Duke of Edinburgh
New guidance was discussed recently within the organisation and Mr Rowe will update you in due course.
I hope your children enjoyed the short stories that have been read by staff and are now uploaded on the school website. In the mean time I hope you remain safe and resilient in the current circumstances within which we all find ourselves.
