Dear Parents and Carers of our Fernwood Family
In these quite extraordinary times we wish you all the very best for your physical and mental well-being. We are now entering phase 2 of the government’s strategy for dealing with the global Coronavirus outbreak and within this letter I will outline the basis on which the school will operate. Full details of the government strategy can be found via our school website link. I will write to you again informing you of the provision for your child’s education whilst at home.
The key principle underlying the strategy is to maintain capacity for the NHS. The most important part of maintaining that strategy is advised as follows:
Fernwood Secondary School will endeavour to play its part. We are under no illusion that it will not be possible to function in the usual manner.
Teaching staff and those that operate in school are defined as key workers. As will come of no surprise some colleagues are already self-isolating for 14 days. Some colleagues will have to remain at home as of Monday because they have young children. Our approach will operate as follows:
This will then enable us to determine the level of need, and in a structured way enable as many colleagues as possible to work from home.
Any child attending school on Monday will not be expected to wear school uniform. Any child attending school on Monday will be allowed to bring their mobile into school. Those are two sentences I never thought I would be putting in a letter!
Finally, our Fernwood family is linked locally and nationally as we are all aware. The birth places of the children extend to over 20 different countries. It is a wonderful school. In these quite extraordinary times we will try our very best to support each other. We all feel so upset for Year 11 students in particular, who have worked so hard in preparing for exams that will now not take place.
At some point life will return to normal. As Headteacher I would like to thank you for your many, many supportive emails.
Wishing you all the very best for all your families, friends and loved ones
