The Fernwood School is a high performing school recognised for its excellent academic standards and outstanding care and discipline. We are a caring community and work collectively to ensure that both students and staff are happy and flourish during their time here.
Our development and training opportunities are tailored to meet the needs of all our staff. The opportunities provided ensure that teachers and fellow professionals are supported to be the very best they can be. We are committed to ensuring that the training and continuous professional development that takes place in school is of the highest possible quality.
We are proud of our long and successful history of training excellent teachers through a variety of routes into the profession. This academic year we have PGCE trainees from a number of universities training with us. We work in close partnership with the University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University, Loughborough University and Teaching School Alliances across the East Midlands to host a number of trainees each year across a range of subjects.
Each trainee is offered personalised learning opportunities and is coached by an experienced and motivated mentor on each placement. Trainees meet weekly with their mentors and also with the ITT Co-ordinator. These meetings provide the opportunity for trainees to reflect on their practice and to take part in a bespoke programme of professional development.
Our training aims to prepare trainees to meet the challenges of the rapidly evolving field of education and equip them with the skills required to be an excellent teacher. We recognise the challenges that beginning teachers face and are responsive to new methods of teaching, the shifting emphasis of the curriculum, the new discoveries and theories in understanding the learning process and advances in subject matter. We ensure all trainees acquire the knowledge, understanding and competence required to succeed as a newly qualified teaching professional.
