Why is Art and Design so important?
The third highest sector of employment in the UK is in the creative industries. The Fernwood School Art and Design department endeavours to reflect this through our continuing relationship with industry. We have several contacts in film, theatre, fashion industries, and commissioning artists and we maintain links through workshops and visits. This gives our pupils an insight into real life employment experience.
What will I learn?
We design our schemes of work to suit and support a range of approaches to art and design. This allows each pupil to experience a variety of techniques and processes to develop transferrable skills through research and application. Pupils will build upon and develop skills and processes learnt in KS3 as well as learn some new techniques. They can specialize in a particular skill like photography, textiles or 3D work or continue to combine and experiment with a variety.

The focus of each topic of study will be exploration, research, developing techniques and outcomes. These outcomes may be linked to a theme or a real life art and design task and some may be inspired by visits to art galleries, industry visits, or workshops with visiting artists and designers. The staff works hard to deliver engaging projects that cover everything from drawing, painting, and 3D work to printing, photography, CAD and textiles skills.
