When we use the term literacy, what do we mean? The dictionary definition states that literacy is ‘the ability to read and write’. At The Fernwood School we think it is more than this. A pupil who has effective literacy skills has the ability to enjoy words, gain understanding from a text and learn the skills they need to become adept communicators.
The Literacy Hub is passionate about promoting and developing literacy skills for all pupils. We are committed to developing pupils’ literacy skills in order to help them be successful across the whole curriculum.
The Literacy Hub’s team of specialists use various skills and programmes to assess and target specific areas for development and provide support tailored to each individual pupil’s needs and requirements. This is achieved through a range of interventions, delivered in small groups or during one to one sessions. Ongoing monitoring is used to check when targets are reached, or new ones need to be set. This monitoring ensures that although pupils are supported, they continue to be stretched and challenged, so that they achieve their full potential.
The Literacy Hub also offers lunchtime clubs which aim to develop pupils’ social skills alongside their literacy skills. The Literacy Hub is inclusive of all abilities and promotes life skills such as interpersonal development, team building and leadership qualities through activities and discussion.
We provide a happy and welcoming environment where we aim to make pupils feel safe, supported and confident.
