Dear Parent / Carer,
At this time of year, all final year Industrial Design / Product Design university students exhibit their major projects to the public alongside their best design work. Many of the students do this with the hope of some of the major companies which visit the exhibitions offering them jobs, but all shows are open to the general public and are free to get in.
If you get an opportunity at a weekend, or even some free time in the early evening it would be really advantageous if you could take your child along to view some of the work in two of the local universities. This will really inspire them, and expose them to possible routes in further education. The exhibitions are really impressive, and it’s almost like walking through a series of ‘Dragons Den’ with the variety of ground breaking products on show. Students are always delighted to talk to pupils too, and share their stories with them.
Following are the dates of the two remaining local exhibitions (Nottingham Trent’s finished this week):
Type: Industrial Design Degree Show 2013
Times: Open Friday 14th June – Monday 17th June from 10am-5pm daily
Location: The Design School, Loughborough University, LE11 3TU
Notes: Loughborough is repeatedly ranked as one of the top 3 universities in the UK for design, and
has a course of around 120 students per year. A bit further to travel, but well worth it! If you
can only visit one, make it this one.
Type: Engineering Design Degree Show 2013
Times: Open Friday 14th June – Tuesday 17th June from 10am-4pm daily (5pm on Friday and Monday)
Location: The ESLC Building (Building 54), University Park, Nottingham, NG7 2RD
Notes: Nottingham has quite a small course which is still very much developing, usually around 15 –
20 students exhibit work. Some interesting ideas can be seen, and not bad for a quick trip in the
I hope that you find this information useful, and that you enjoy any visits that you manage to make.
