I would like to make you aware of some changes to English groups that will take effect in January 2015.
Now that Year 7 have been with us for a full term, we feel that it is an opportune time to reset the class groups in English ready for a new term and a new topic.
We have assessed the reading and writing skills of each child and now have a good picture of their strengths and weaknesses. This has helped us to regroup the children into new classes that are arranged with a particular focus in mind, such as written accuracy, spelling or reading for understanding.
All pupils will still continue to follow the same curriculum and all pupils will be taught the full range of reading and writing skills in their lessons. The regrouping will allow us to concentrate on an area of development with more focus.
It is important to note that the group number (for example, 7X1, and 7X3) does not indicate a hierarchy of groups or sets. All pupils are grouped according to ability and multiple classes will be working at the same level but will have a different area for development. With this in mind, please reassure your child that moving from 7Y1 to 7Y3, for example, is not a case of ‘moving down’ as the classes are not arranged in vertical sets. Teachers will be emphasising this point in lessons too.
We hope that regrouping pupils in this way will help us to offer extra support to your child as they develop their skills in English. Furthermore, there will be opportunities to reassess the groupings as we move through KS3.
If you would like further clarification on this matter, please contact the school by phone or email.
