Dear Parent / Carer,
As you will already be aware, as part of your child’s GCSE Design and Technology qualification they have been engaged in a lengthy controlled assessment (which is similar to what was previously known as coursework). The work involves the redesign and then modelling of a product based on your child’s own design. The controlled assessment represents 60% of the overall qualification, with a final exam responsible for the remainder.
Your child has so far been focussed on the research, design and modelling phases, but as we now move into the practical stage your child will need more time within workshops in order to immerse themselves in the manufacturing process. To help with this we are running an immersion day for them on Monday 26th January, where your child will be out of normal lessons, focussing solely on the manufacture of their product.
Staff will be working with your child ahead of this day to ensure that they maximise the benefits of the time and facilities, but we are also requesting that the students are in school earlier than usual.
Students will need to arrive at school for 7:30am to begin work, and are to bring a packed lunch with them (students eligible for free school meals will need to organise a ‘grab a bag’) as they will not be following the normal break and lunch format. Normal school uniform is to be worn, and they will be finished for 3.10pm.
Many thanks for your ongoing support, and we all hope this day allows your child to make substantial progress with their project.
Mr D. Jones
Head of Faculty
