The English department at the Fernwood School consists of 12 teaching staff. The staff are committed to the providing all students with the opportunities to thrive in their literacy and reading for pleasure, which is encouraged throughout key stage 3 and 4. The development of pedagogy at The Fernwood School is something we are deeply passionate about and the successful candidate would contribute to the schemes of learning with ideas, activities and resources.
The English department continues to enjoy success with excellent results. The Progress 8 score for English in 2018 was 0.37, and 0.3 in 2019. Our students are taught in classes set broadly on ability for the most part, with mixed ability classes in years 7 and 8. The curriculum revolves around a variety of texts at key stage 3, including Shakespeare, poetry, non-fiction and contemporary literature in Year 7-9. We follow the AQA specification for GCSE with the vast majority of students being entered for both English Language and English Literature. We nurture a love of reading for pleasure through the various book clubs and author visits which take place throughout the year.
We require an enthusiastic, innovative and committed teacher of KS3 & KS4 English. For candidates seeking additional responsibility, there is the opportunity to be considered for the Assistant Faculty Leader for English role, with responsibility for KS4. Candidates should specify in their application whether they wish to apply for a mainscale position, or for a mainscale position with additional leadership responsibility. The Assistant Faculty Leader role entails supporting the Head of Faculty in developing the KS4 curriculum and monitoring pupils’ progress across KS4-including achievement and behaviour.
The successful candidate will be joining a talented, successful and supportive faculty, where teaching and learning is at the heart of our collaborative practice. As the school grows over the next 3 years to accommodate 1500 students across 2 key stages, the successful candidate will play an integral part in ensuring high standards of practice are maintained for all children.
