Dear Parent/Carer
Work experience February 6th – 10th 2017
I write to inform you that all Year 10 students will be spending a week on work experience next year. Work Experience is:
Obviously it is desirable to place a student in a job which they may wish to pursue in the future. However, this cannot always be guaranteed.
Unfortunately, due to recent Government cuts in Education Services, Nottinghamshire County Council has significantly increased the cost of Health & Safety checking for Work Experience placements. In previous years it cost the school £13 per placement, this figure has increased to £31 for this academic year. Whilst the school is committed to all students experiencing a worthwhile work placement, the overall cost for this year will be £6200. In light of this we are requesting that parents contribute £5 per student (this is payable via Parent Pay) towards the cost of the placement. As always, out of county placements will need to be paid in full by parents. If you wish to discuss this please contact either myself or Mr S Roe, Assistant Head Teacher.
I have a number of placements which I am able to offer to students, but these amount to fewer than 100. I will have to rely, therefore, on students finding their own placements.
If they do find their own placement, they must give me details, in writing, which should include the contact name and number, the name of the company, address and description of the placement (slip attached). I will then make sure it has been checked for Health and Safety.
A good way of finding placements is to go to:
http://notts.work-experience.co.uk. Log in User name = fernwood9 Password = school.
This website has all of the companies which have ever offered placements to schools in Nottingham. It does not necessarily mean that they will automatically offer this year. Students will need to contact them first. Another way is for a student to send a letter to a company they would like to work for.
If students wish to find a placement, it must not be one that I have already been offered by an employer. To check this your son/daughter must come to see me. The emphasis here is on the students taking the initiative. This is an ideal opportunity for them to demonstrate a responsible and mature approach to their own Work Experience.
I look forward to your cooperation in this venture. Please do not hesitate to speak to me if you need clarification.
Yours sincerely
Mr Roe
