Year 6 Transition – September 2020

Dear Parent/Carer,

I hope this letter finds you and your family safe and healthy and adapting well to the current extended period of learning at home. As a parent/carer of a child/children in Year 6, I am sure that you and your child/children may currently have some questions regarding the Year 6 Transition and Induction process, and how this might work going forward, given secondary schools are still closed.

I would like to take this opportunity to reassure you that all of the usual robust planning and particular care that always go into the Year 6 Transition and Induction process are unchanged, and are very much still happening, and underway.

This includes:

Contact being made with all primary schools of students coming to Fernwood in September. A variety of information is being collected and collated including students’ levels of ability, as well as any additional learning, medical, or pastoral needs.
Individual meetings with Year 6 teachers (via Microsoft Teams) lead by the Fernwood Transition Team ( Mrs Morrill – Assistant Head Teacher Transition Year 6-7, Mr Smith – Pastoral Team Leader Year 7, Miss Rowe – Assistant Pastoral Team Leader Year 7, Mr Grant – SENCO, Mrs Hopkinson – Admissions and Attendance )

This very close liaison with our primary schools supports the crucial transfer of information to support your child/children as they move from Year 6 to Year 7.

In addition, in the current climate, I do not foresee us being able to run our Induction Days planned for the 1st and 2nd of July in the same way as in previous years. Whilst this is a challenge, we plan instead to find new ways to get to know and connect with you and your Year 6 child/ children – whether you are a new parent/carer to Fernwood School or whether you have another child/children currently on roll with us.

Our current plan for the Induction Programme is to look at:

A video tour of the school
Introductions from key staff available to view via our website
An introduction to various curriculum areas available to view via our website
Possible opportunities for some children in smaller groups to take part in remote “Question and Answer” sessions

Clearly we are already in close contact with Year 6 teachers to address any questions that arise, and our key aim remains to welcome you most warmly, and support you and your Year 6 child/children at this very important time.
