Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh Award

Published on 12th March 2015

Dear Parent/Carer

Re: Year 9 Bronze Level Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

I am writing to invite parents/carers of Year 9 pupils interested in participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme to an information meeting on Wednesday 18th March 2015 at 6.30pm.

In each of the last 3 years we have enjoyed a large swell of interest by Year 9 pupils wishing to take part. This meeting is open to all Y9 pupils and their parents who wish to come along and find out more.  Attending the meeting does not commit you to anything, though I hope it will encourage you to get involved.

As you may be aware the D of E scheme involves pupils in:

  • voluntary work (e.g. participating in a community project)
  • developing a new skill
  • personal, physical development, and
  • participation in an outdoor expedition and its relevant training.

In anticipation, we have contacted an outside provider to train pupils for, and run, the expedition component of the award.  The providers are known as BPE (Bull Precision Expeditions Limited) an experienced and well established provider of outdoor and adventure activities, ranging from D of E through to polar expeditions.

We welcome Steve Wilkins from BPE to join us at our meeting.  Steve Wilkins is D of E lead and will make a presentation about the plans we have in place. For further information visit or

Also in attendance will be staff from Fernwood who have kindly put time aside to support our pupils in this venture.

I look forward to meeting as many Year 9 parents/carers on Wednesday as possible.

Many thanks for your continued support

Yours sincerely
