Microsoft Teams

Fernwood uses Microsoft Teams as a vehicle to set all home learning for our students. Students may also make notes in their paper-based diaries if they find this helps them. Students are asked to mark set home learning as complete within Teams if it is paper or exercise book based, or occasionally submit work electronically too.   Feedback on home learning from teachers may also be given via Microsoft Teams.

Microsoft Teams also enables many other facilities in addition to home learning such as:

  • Access to course files and broader materials
  • Sharing of information and links
  • Remote learning (if needed)

As a parent you will receive a weekly digest of the work set to your child via your primary email address sent every weekend, but will not be able to access the work directly.

Student access from home via computer or mobile device

Microsoft Teams can be accessed from any internet browser, or can be downloaded as an ‘app’ to almost any device, including phones/tablets/desktops/laptops completely for free.

  • If you intend to access Teams from a web browser, always access Microsoft Teams via the school ‘hub’, never go directly from Google (this ensures you are signed in with the correct account).
  • If you are struggling to log in, double check you are signing in with your full school email address.

Year 7

When students start school in September they will automatically be enrolled in Microsoft Teams. Students will be shown in their first CS lesson (ICT) how to use the system and how to access it from home.

Parents of new starters to the school

You will receive an email from Microsoft inviting you to join your child’s classes. This will be sent to the primary email address we have for you. Please check your junk/spam folder if you have not seen this.

  • Please accept the invite.
  • You should now start to receive weekly emails, which Microsoft automatically sends early on a Saturday morning (normally).
  • The email will give you a summary of homework set, materials now available, discussions and extra resources for your child. It will also highlight the work that was handed in late or is yet to be completed (assuming your child remembered to ‘mark as done’ for each piece completed).

Please be aware that as a parent you will not be able to see your child’s classes via the app, you will only receive an email. If you would like to see more, please ask your child to show you it once they have logged in.
