Safeguarding and Well Being
There is a dedicated of staff team who are responsible for safeguarding at the school. Mrs Cannon, Assistant Headteacher is the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). The Deputy Safeguarding Leads (DDSL) are Mrs Green (Deputy Headteacher), Mr Campbell (Mental Health Lead), Mrs Morrill, Mr Parrott, Mr Asumang, and Mr Hughes. Mr Rothwell has also completed DSL training. Students are made aware of the support available to them on a regular basis via assemblies, tutor time, Personal Development lessons and posters in classrooms. All staff at the school receive regular training and are adept at supporting children who disclose any concerns or need someone to talk to. Students at Fernwood are encouraged to be open about any additional support they may need and know that they can choose who to speak with. We have a Mental Health Lead who co-ordinates provision in this area and ensures that mental health remains high on the agenda with staff and students alike. We also have two Well-Being Mentors who can support students in school as well as a school nurse and a counsellor. This team, along with the Mental Health Support Team, run daily drop-in sessions every lunch time and any student can attend without an appointment, if they need someone to talk to. We work closely with outside agencies to provide support for young people and visiting counsellors come into school from B U Notts and the Mental Health Support Team.
At The Fernwood School, we are aware of the vast range of challenges that may face our students and our comprehensive Personal Development curriculum supports students to navigate the world they are growing up in. We work hard, as a staff, to build relationships with students and their families so we can support with whatever they may need as they develop through their time with us.
If you have a safeguarding concern, then please contact the DSL or DDSL at school or through the email below:
We regularly signpost students to other agencies as required; please see links below.
